First, let's start with taking a look at what soy wax is. Soy wax is a vegetable wax derived from the oil of soybeans. The primary use of this wax is to make candles. Most of the world’s soybeans are grown and harvested close to home here in the Midwestern United States. So by using soy candles, you are helping to support American farmers. Making soy wax is a completely natural process without waste. Farmers harvest the soybeans, clean them, crack them, and dehull them. Then they roll them into flakes. Once this happens, the soybean oil is extracted from the flakes. The leftover flakes are used for animal feed. The soy oil is then hydrogenated. Hydrogenating oil is the process of converting some of its fatty acids from unsaturated to saturated. This raises the melting point of the oil to where it is a solid at room temperature. The end result, a natural product called soy wax.
